I agree, sometimes people face difficult circumstances in their lives and need public assistance - that is what it is designed for. Not everyone always has the best or even good opportunities.

I'm sorry you have had a difficult run of circumstances and appreciate that you too have suffered from bigotry. It is in everyone's benefit that all people have the same opportunities including the right to marry the one they love.

Everyone is different from the mainstream one way or another, and it is a healthier society which has room to include those "different" from themselves - especially when it hurts no one, takes nothing from anyone. Everyone needs to learn to give and take, to accept in order to be accepted, to forgive in order to be forgiven.

I appreciate your post here, but as someone who has been "on government assistance" I assure you that this is not necessarily something "only bad people do". Of course some abuse the system. But some turn to it when they desperately need it.

I used to do all of the things above as a contributing member of society, paying taxes, doing volunteer work, building communities, but unfortunately I did not have EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW.

So now I am on welfare and food stamps. Ironically, it is all due to discrimination against gays.

In 2008, the limit is $15,500. If you are 50 in 2008, it's $20,500.
2009 goes up to $16,500 / $22,000

A 401(k) is savings. It does not have to be 100% in stocks. For those who are fearful of the market, the 401(k) should have a money market or short term bond option. But either way, continuing to save is a good idea.
