Several months ago T. Boone Pickens announced the Pickens plan to invest money and promote wind power. It was a refreshing and amazing statement that a life long oil man basically said, ‘I’m going to now invest in wind power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help the environment, and oh yeah… I’ll probably make a million or two in the process as well’.
For a capitalist investor who has made millions to say, ‘I believe in wind power’ was quite amazing. This is not a man to invest money without truly believing in its potential.
Shortly after the announcement, he was on Larry King and was asked, by Larry, ‘why are you doing this, your in your 80s you’ll not likely to see any significant benefit from doing this’. Pickens replied that he didn’t care, its the ‘right thing’ to do.
In many places in our country, wind power has the potential to power our cities, businesses and homes. And with the further development of electric cars, power our cars and trucks.
Some say that wind mills are a eye sore, they ruin the view, I say, look the other way. When you compare the impact on the environment, the economic and geopolitical consequences of our dependence on foreign oil, there is no choice but to ‘look the other way’. Wind power is too important.
Others say, they will hurt migratory birds. The reality is we need to put more resources into figuring out a way to ‘warn’ birds to fly around the wind mill. There can and will be a solution, we just need to figure out one.
Throughout history man has used the wind, we now need to do so in a way that advances our society and gives us energy independence. Pickens is right on wind power.
